I've never run a Blog before but for Woody Baldwin I'll try. This post is for new friends to Woody and to Prime Timers. Here we ask for comments (positive I hope) about how the organization started by Woody has enriched their life.
Welcome. For this first topic I (the administrator) am requesting those persons who have known Woody for years to make a short entry about him. Perhaps a short story of some interest or simply a muse upon your impression of the man.
Prime Timers got its start over 20 years ago. In the 1980s, I retired as a college professor, and was interested in volunteering for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. After a few attempts with various organizations, it became apparent that ageism was the barrier.
I thought it would be nice to try to get a group of older gay men together to socialize. After talking with friends and acquaintances we got enough interest that we planned a meeting. When 42 men came to this first meeting of Prime Timers I was delighted. After the success in Boston a group formed in New York. Next was Austin, then Dallas, then chapters began popping up all over. Since its beginning, Prime Timers has been a social organization.
My philosophy focuses on gay men having opportunities to socialize not intending to venture into politics. "If older gay men can be as happy [or happier] as when we were young, we will have reached our goal."
